On September 11th, 2025, the Trinidad and Tobago Cyber Security Incident Response Team (TT-CSIRT) hosted a one-day workshop for a group of talented university students, providing them with invaluable hands-on experience in national cybersecurity. This Cyber Immersion Workshop served as a pivotal opportunity for these aspiring, young professionals, allowing them to gain practical insights into critical areas of the field.
The workshop, designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, gave students the opportunity to delve into four core pillars of cybersecurity as follows:
Threat Intelligence: Participants learned how to proactively identify and analyze potential cyber threats. They explored methods for gathering and interpreting data to understand the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) of malicious actors, enabling them to anticipate and mitigate future attacks.
Incident Response: The students were put through a simulated cyber-attack scenario, where they had to apply a structured approach to contain, eradicate, and recover from a security breach. This hands-on exercise honed their problem-solving skills and taught them the importance of swift, decisive action in a crisis.
Digital Forensics: A key part of the workshop involved digital forensics, where students learned to meticulously collect and preserve digital evidence. This process is crucial for understanding the scope of an attack and for legal proceedings. They were introduced to tools and techniques used to trace the origin of a breach and identify the attackers.
Crisis Communication: Beyond the technical aspects, the workshop emphasized the importance of effective communication during a cyber incident. Students learned how to craft clear, concise messages for stakeholders, including internal teams, senior management, and the public, to manage reputational risk and maintain trust.
Hosting such workshops is vital for supporting the nation’s youth and is an integral part of TT-CSIRT’s overall mandate. By empowering and encouraging young talent to pursue careers in cybersecurity, the CSIRT is directly contributing to building a more resilient and secure digital future for Trinidad and Tobago. We at the TT-CSIRT remain steadfast in our commitment to invest in the nation’s future by continuing to host similar workshops, fostering a new generation of cyber professionals dedicated to safeguarding national assets and infrastructure.
