TTCSIRT-103.032718: TT-CSIRT Advisory – FireFox Security Updates

Mozilla has released a security update stating that multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Mozilla Firefox and Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) which could allow for remote code execution.

Details of the vulnerabilities are as follows:

a) A remote code-execution vulnerability exists because it fails to properly process Vorbis audio data. Specifically, this issue occurs due to an out-of-bounds write error in the ‘libvorbis’ library – (CVE-2018-5146).

b) A remote code-execution vulnerability exists because it fails to properly process Vorbis audio data. Specifically, this issue occurs due to an out-of-bounds write error in the ‘libtremor’ library – (CVE-2018-5147).

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow for remote code execution. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative privileges.

Further information on these vulnerabilities and how they can be mitigated can be found on the Mozilla Website at https://www.cisecurity.org/advisory/multiple-vulnerabilities-in-mozilla-firefox-could-allow-for-remote-code-execution_2018-030/
